Crosscanonby St John’s Church of England Primary School has moved from being rated as satisfactory to “good” after a government inspection.

Ofsted inspectors said that the village school’s teaching and achievement were good, pupils were eager to learn and staff showed high levels of commitment.

It said children began in reception year with abilities broadly typical for their age and left year six with above-average attainment.

The report found teaching to be good and lessons interesting. Behaviour and safety were good and pupils were said to have positive attitudes to learning and behaviour, which was often outstanding.

The report suggested that to become “outstanding” the school needed to raise attainment in maths and improve the use of outdoor learning.

The school was also inspected by the Diocesan inspectorate which said the school, through its distinctive Christian character, was outstanding at meeting the needs of all learners.

Stephen Mitchelhill, headteacher, said: “I am delighted that teaching is acknowledged as good and the children’s behaviour is described as outstanding.

“This is a school where all children are included, learn well and feel safe and happy.”
