The youngsters from Southfield Technology College will take part in a World Challenge expedition with maths teacher Leslie McNeillie.

Jake Daniel, Niall Topping, PJ Kent, Heather Waugh and Josh Burns will leave on April 5 and spend eight days in North Africa.

Mrs McNeillie said: “The youngsters will be in charge of the budget and they may have to organise what food we have and where we have it.”

The pupils have also been working to pay for the trip for themselves.

She added: “There is responsibility on them to raise as much money as possible for the trip and not just to ask their parents.”

They will be joined by a group of six children from a school in Surrey, and Mrs McNeillie added that this would provide them with an extra challenge in learning to work together as a team. The World Challenge group helps to set up educational trips to the developing world.
