Pupils at a Cockermouth school raised nearly £200 for charity by getting their wellies on.

Fairfield Infant School and Nursery held a harvest festival and raised money for Farm Africa’s Give Hunger the Boot campaign.

Pupils at the school decorated their wellies to raise money for Farm Africa, a charity which supports farmers in eastern Africa.

Andrea Pattinson, headteacher, said: “The children have enjoyed it. We have had some very creative wellies, some people have put some great effort into it.

“They are understanding other parts of the world. We have been building an understanding of healthy eating and geography.

“We link it all to the learning to make it meaningful to the children.”

Two representatives from Derwent & Solway Housing Association were also there to present six pupils with a bag of gardening tools for winning their sunflower competition.

In June, the housing association gave each pupil a sunflower seed which they had to look after and grow. Last month, they had to send in a photo of their sunflowers and Derwent & Solway picked the winners.
