Pupils from across West Cumbria competed in the Rotary Technology tournament in Workington.

Seventy-one pupils and 11 teachers from six secondary schools had to build a coin maker from materials including wood, paper, glue and sticky tape at the event last Friday.

The tournament took place at Hunday Manor Hotel and the pupils were divided into teams of four, with a separate competition for foundation, ages 12-14, intermediate, 15-16, and advanced, 17-18.

The competing schools were Workington’s St Joseph’s School and Southfield Technology College, Keswick School, Cockermouth School, West Lakes Academy and Whitehaven’s St Benedict’s School.

There were also three staff teams, who were mixed together from the schools.

John Mather, president of Workington Rotary, said: “They have shown great ingenuity, creativity, and teamwork.

“It brings young people from different schools into contact with each other. I am bowled over by the quality of these young minds.”

Workington MP Tony Cunningham, Allerdale mayor and mayoress Joe and Dorothy Holliday, Copeland mayor and mayoress John and Linda Jackson, and the Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, Sir James Cropper, were all invited.

Mr Cunningham said: “The future of this area is based around technology and engineering. Getting young people interested in technology is the future.”

The winners of the three competitions were given a certificate, a trophy for the school, a science book and £20 HMV vouchers.

The runners-up also got a science book and certificate.

The foundation winners were Cockermouth School and another team from the same school were runners-up.

The intermediate winners were Southfield Technology College and the runners-up were Cockermouth School.

The advanced winners were Keswick School and the runners-up were Cockermouth School.
