Workington school pupils show off their top art works

Budding young Workington artists celebrated the end of their school year with an exhibition of the best of their work.

Nine Southfield Technology College students displayed their art in the school’s gallery this week.

The exhibition was also opened to parents, teachers and the public in the evening.

Sam Tinkler, school head of art, said: “The quality and contrast of the work is remarkable.

“Examiners have told us that we are not looking at anything lower than a grade B for each student’s work. They have out performed their predicted marks by two grades, which is fantastic news.”

Natural disasters, geometry in nature and personal encounters were among topics chosen by the group.

Abbie Carruthers, 17, of Scaw Road, High Harrington, produced a piece on memorabilia.

“I am really pleased with the outcome,” she said.

Matthew Meldrum, 17, of Elterwater Avenue, Workington, drew on his experience of being caught in a hurricane in 2004 in Florida to produce a series of work on natural disasters.

He said: “My art is based on Hurricane Katrina and the devastation it left behind.”

Vivienne Westwood was an inspiration for Courtney Goodwin, 17, of John Street, Workington, who used her passion for drawing faces in her personal encounters project.

She said her work was the result of a year’s worth of drawing and painting.

Have your say

I attended the exhibition for parents on Wednesday night and was so impressed by high standard of all of students work. Well done all of you. You are all very, very talented and should be really proud of yourselves. I certainly am! Looking forward to the next show :-) Kath x(Courtney's mam)

Just to point out that these students are from Workington Sixth Form Centre which is the JOINT sixth form for pupils from Stainburn School & Science College and Southfield Technology College.
