MITCHELL’S final sale of store and breeding stock in 2007 saw a catalogue entry of 180 store cattle through the ring. An improved entry of male cattle were £36 per head better on average than the previous sale, selling to a top of £582 for a Limousin bullock from Mrs R Logue, Forrester Fold. Female cattle were a similar fast trade to recent sales. The top price heifer was a Limousin from T Dixon of Egremont, which made £612. There were a handful of Dairy heifers forward and these continue to meet tremendous local demand, selling to top of £1,650 for a newly calved heifer from D Robinson, Dovenby Craggs and closely followed at £1,625 by another smart heifer from B Burrough, Waites Farm, Pardshaw. A strong entry of Continental calves met their best trade for several weeks, selling to a top of £235 for a Belgian Blue heifer from J Clark, Fairladies Farm, St Bees. Mr Clark also sold the top priced bull calf at £195, again for a Belgian Blue. An excellent entry of Continental feeding cows sold very well in a competitive environment to top at £522 for a Belgian Blue X cow from S Hardisty and Son, How Hall.

Loweswater Show cancelled
Last updated at 17:42, Tuesday, 02 September 2008
THIS weekend’s Loweswater Show has been cancelled.
The decision was taken last night to cancel the show after farmers could not get on to the grass to prepare the show field due to persistent rain.
The show, situated opposite New House Farm, in the Lorton Valley, was meant to take place on Sunday.
Show secretary Annette Billinghurst, said: “We are very disappointed that we have had to cancel the show.
“We had hoped that this would be the one show that would go ahead after the cancellation of others, but due to the weather we have not been able to prepare the show field.
"There were major concerns about car parking as well and we reluctantly had to take the decision to cancel it.
“The rain has caused a lot of damage and all the people I have spoken to are very disappointed that it has had to be cancelled.
“It is a small traditional agricultural show and we are bitterly disappointed that we have had to take this decision.”
