A Cumbrian town is set to launch a community alliance to help support people living with dementia.

The new Dementia Action Alliance for Aspatria and District is due to launch in May.

It will bring together organisations and individuals to help improve the lives of people living with dementia, their carers, family and friends, through health and social care services.

A recent study into the rural dementia identified four areas of concern - the physical hazards posed by farm environments, a relucatnace to ask for help, a lack of awareness of available support and the considerable changes taking place in rural communities.

The dementia action alliance will invite people to share their experience, research and learning with the community at its launch event on May 16 at Aspatria Rugby Club.

Phill Roberts, chairman, said: "Dementia is having a devastating impact on our communities and there is now evidence that the impact on our rural communities will be greater given that there are more elderly people living in rural areas.

"The launch of the Aspatria and District Dementia Action Alliance will ensure that we can develop a dementia friendly community to meet the needs of those with a diagnosis and their carers who are often family and friends.

"I would urge people to become dementia friends and for all businesses to consider becoming dementia friendly businesses."

The alliance's next meeting is on Monday at 2pm at West Street Surgery.

Anyone interested in supporting the project is welcome to attend.
