People in Workington can continue to see GPs seven days a week after a successful pilot scheme.

Workington's five surgeries came together for a national pilot to provide GP and nurse practitioner services daily.

They provided urgent appointments daily between 8am and 8pm through Workington Primary Care Centre, based at the town's hospital.

A walk-in minor injuries service open to all was also provided.

Patient feedback and other evaluation showed that evening and weekend appointments were popular.

NHS England and NHS Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group has now provided funding to continue the service with amended hours.

Urgent same-day appointments and treatment for minor injuries will still be available from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday.

At weekends, the services will now be offered from 10am to 4pm.

The new times will be introduced from November 5.

Dr Niall McGreevy, Allerdale lead GP for the clinical commissioning group, and a GP at James Street Practice, said: "We are pleased that the hard work of all the staff involved in this scheme has been recognised, and that we can continue to work in collaboration to offer this seven-day service to our patients.

"We know from the feedback from patients that they value the flexibility of evening and weekend appointments."

Originally called Workington Access Centre, the pilot scheme was one of 20 launched across the UK.

It began in October 2014.
