A West Cumbrian GP surgery has been rated 'good' by a health watchdog.

The Care Quality Commission inspected Orchard House Surgery, on South William Street, Workington, last month.

The watchdog said the GP practice was 'good' in all the areas inspected, improving from last year's outcome when the surgery was told it required improvement to its safety.

The report said: "When we inspected the practice in May 2016 the practice could not demonstrate that the arrangements for managing medicines, including vaccinations, were fully satisfactory.

"At this inspection, we found the practice had put in place systems, processes and practices in place to keep patients safe, and safeguarded from abuse."

Inspectors also said staff were caring and patients were treated with dignity.

The report said: "Patients said they were treated with compassion, dignity and respect and they felt involved in decisions about their care and treatment.

"We saw that staff treated patients with kindness and respect, and maintained confidentiality."

In a statement, Julie Harris and Gillian Blackburn, joint practice managers, said: "We at Orchard House Surgery are extremely proud of the CQC ratings of Good across all areas, with some areas of outstanding practice.

"We are also thrilled that the CQC has deemed it appropriate for the surgery to have no areas that require improvement, although we are fully committed to working with our local CQC Inspector to maintain our current standard of achievement in the future.

"We feel the CQC reports confirm the dedicated hard work and effort the doctors and all the staff collectively have achieved within our practice and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their hard work and dedication.

"As per our mission statement, Orchard House Surgery is committed to maintaining and enhancing its reputation for being a caring and innovative practice. It is our intention that this tradition continues by providing a supportive and personal service."
