A Workington surgery is celebrating after being praised by the Care Quality Commission.

Inspectors visited Oxford Street Surgery and rated its safety, effectiveness, care, leadership and response to patients' needs as good.

Sharon Wilson, practice manager, said: "We are immensely proud to receive our good rating across the board at Oxford Street Surgery.

"This is a very positive outcome which reflects the hard work and dedication of the doctors and all the staff and our continued mission to provide excellent levels of service to our patients and the community."

Professor Steve Field, chief inspector of general practice, said there was an "open and transparent approach" to patient and staff safety and an effective system for reporting and recording significant events, which staff learned from.

Services were also said to be tailored to individual needs and staff were engaged in monitoring and improving quality.

Risks to patients and staff were said to be assessed and well managed.

The practice was also commended for working with other organisations to meet patients' needs.

Emotional and social needs were considered as important as physical needs and patients were treated with respect and involved in decisions about their treatment, the report said.

However, it was recommended that the surgery carried out a yearly review of significant events and that a formal system was implemented for updating the practice's clinical guidelines.

The surgery serves 7,134 patients.
