A new group to support isolated people feel part of the community has been set up at a Workington community centre.

Healthy Hopes is the brainchild of Viv Nichols and Kerry Manson, who have a background in mental health.

The group, which started in September, meets weekly at Moorclose Community Centre on Needham Drive.

Viv, a mental health nurse, said: "The purpose is to get people who feel socially isolated get together and promote health and well-being.

"We do relaxation sessions and different activities but we are very person-centred. If people want to talk about a subject we do, we let the session go where everybody wants it to go.

"This group is important because it strengthens the community."

Kerry, who has worked in children services and mental health charities, said: "These sessions benefit everybody, anybody can attend, no matter where they are in life."

Linda Dixon, 55, of Salterbeck, who attends the sessions, said: "It's really helpful, it gets you out of the house and you get to meet new friends, you're able to talk about things and the sessions are free.

"I'm on my own all day, I don't see anyone if not carers."

Jane Matthews, 36, of Hunday Court, who also attends the sessions, said: "I come to integrate more in the community and make new friends in a relaxed and comfortable environment, where you can be yourself and no one will judge you for that."

The project is funded by housing association Your Derwent & Solway and the directors hope it will expand to other venues in the future.

Sessions take place every Wednesday from 12.30pm to 2.30pm and are free to attend.
