Staff at a Workington restaurant will be able to save lives after having a new defibrillator installed.

Caspian Flame & Grill, on Derwent Drive, has had the equipment put in thanks to the Times & Star Heart Start Campaign.

The North West Ambulance Service has provided the campaign with 10 defibrillators for public use.

Sohrab Padidar-Nazar, Caspian owner, said: "If people see them in place that gives them encouragement and it's for the good of the community. Even if we only save one life it's worth it.

"It's important to have people on our premises trained to use it and understand how to use it. They're not difficult to use and people should not be frightened of using them."

The restaurant has also raised £900 to pay for the cabinet which is mounted to the side of the building and secured the cash in just four weeks.

The first defibrillator was set up at the Ewanrigg Community Centre in Maryport in July and another will be put in place at the Cumberland Hotel in Workington.

Campaign partner Rotary have also been working with the ambulance service to help bring in the devices and are backing the campaign.

Kevin Walsh, of Rotary, said: "It's great to be part of the campaign. We put effort into services in the community and it's a practical example of doing something for everybody.

"We know businesses who have them on their premises and I would encourage as many defibrillators to be publicly accessible as possible."

The Times & Star is hoping to install 15 defibrillators across West Cumbria and is looking for more host sites and people can support the campaign through fund-raising.
