Campaigners will hold a demonstration outside Whitehaven's West Cumberland Hospital as the new £90 million building opens to the public for the first time.

Members of pressure group We Need West Cumberland Hospital, who are fighting to keep as many services as possible on site rather than transferring patients elsewhere, say this is the perfect time to make their voices heard.

Campaign leader Siobhan Gearing said: "The idea is to demonstrate with our placards at the hospital. We will also have users of any lost or under-threat services at the hospital to show what we still need.

"We need current and past patients from all walks of life as every one of us has a story to tell."

Open days on September 24 and 25 have been organised to give people the chance to see behind the scenes at the long-awaited hospital ahead of its opening on October 5.

The open day demonstration takes place on Thursday, September 24, and those taking part can meet at the front of the hospital at 10am.
