Workington MP Sue Hayman has pledged not to drink alcohol during January to raise money for Alcohol Concern.
Mrs Hayman signed up to the Dry January initiative after she was shocked to discover that West Cumbria's alcohol-related injury and illness rates were above the national average.
She said: "The cost to society of alcohol-related problems is estimated at £34 million a year in Allerdale alone.
"Tackling the issue is a priority for our local health services and it is part of the county's action plan, but we can all play a part by raising awareness."
