Nurse cadets at Lakes College, Lillyhall, have organised Christmas hampers for Whitehaven's West Cumberland Hospital.

The year one cadets held a fundraising cake sale and games, enabling them to create the hampers for staff on the Henderson Suite and special care baby unit.

They raised enough to buy two baskets and fill them with goodies.

The college's catering department donated homemade chocolate and fudge for the hampers.

Once they were made up, the hampers were presented to hospital staff.

A spokesman for the group said: "We really enjoyed taking the Christmas hamper to the special care baby unit.

"Despite being really busy with college work, we enjoyed planning and fundraising for the Christmas hampers. We chose to create the hampers for the Henderson Suite and special care baby unit because some of us have had relatives who have been treated there.”

Sonia Hyde, tutor and work placement coordinator, said: "I am very proud of all the hard work they put into the fundraising, buying the baskets and coordinating who was buying what items to go in the baskets. The hampers looked wonderful."

The Nurse Cadet programme is run in partnership with the NHS, and was created to allow students to study towards a level three diploma in health and social care while gaining work experience to improve their chances of achieving a place at university.
