Fifty staff at two Workington schools have new-found lifesaving skills.

Victoria Infant and Nursery School and Victoria Junior School have teamed up with the Oliver King Foundation to help increase the chances of a child surviving a cardiac arrest.

The foundation was launched in memory of a 12-year-old boy who died of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome, caused by heart rhythm abnormalities.

Each school has secured a life-saving defibrillator from the foundation, which can be used to shock a heart back into normal rhythm in the event of a cardiac arrest.

As well as being available in an emergency at the schools, executive headteacher Pauline Robertson said the machines could be used by people in the surrounding area too.

The schools are fund-raising to pay for the defibrillators.

Mrs Robertson got in touch with the foundation after seeing it featured on BBC One's The One Show.

She said: "We now know that if anything happens we have the equipment."
