Two new full-time GPs will start work at a Cockermouth surgery next month.

Dr Carolyn Rigg and Dr Jane Margetts will join Castlegate and Derwent Surgery in November.

They are moving from outside the area.

Practice manager Suzanne Hughes-Rudd said: "Both GPs will be working full time and will replace GPs who have already left.

"Although this is really positive for the town we are continuing to manage on reduced appointments until the new GPs join and like most practices are struggling to cope with the on the day demand.

"We try to offer the best possible service and continue to look at different ways of working to make the service accessible."

Dr Alison Pearson will leave the practice at the end of the year. The surgery also has a vacancy for temporary maternity cover to start early next year.

Next week, the surgery's patient participation group will host sessions about the GP online services.

Members will be explaining the services, including how to make appointments, order repeat medication and access health records.

The sessions will start on Monday and run from 10am to 12.30pm and 2.30pm to 4.30pm daily (except Wednesday afternoon).
