A Workington gym is offering a free membership to people willing to write about getting fit.

Curves Gym, at Clay Flatts, is looking for people who would not normally go to the gym to join the challenge.

Janine Ward, manager at the ladies' only gym, said: "We'd like to engage people who wouldn't typically come to the gym.

"We'd offer a six-month free membership which includes a diet plan and they would have to blog about their journey curve twice a week."

The gym, which was opened in 2009 by Janine's sister Samantha Joughin, will offer personal training and will focus on building up strength gradually.

Janine said: "When you get through the door you do a health consultation to see what has worked for you in the past and what hasn't, your eating habits, if there's anyone supporting you.

"We take measurements and set some short term goals. What we do with every member is also that we call them if they don't come to the gym to see if there are any problems or ways we can help.

"We're like a community, coming to the gym is a good way of meeting people and we organise social events every three months to encourage members to get to know each other."

The fitness experience of the selected candidates will be shared on the Times & Star website and social media.

Mary Powell, 68, of Workington, has been a member for six years. She said: "I retired after 40 years of teaching and I decided to get fit, I tried different classes but it was always a bit intense. I've found this place six years ago and I'm still coming.

"It's unique, you feel comfortable, it's not a challenge but it's challenging for your level. There are people of all ages, shapes and sizes, it's a nice atmosphere and you get the support you need."

Sue Riach, 51, of Workington, joined the gym last summer.

She said: "I wanted to get fit but I wanted something to keep me motivated. I joined because I wanted to do the Zumba classes, but never in a million years I thought I would be the type of person that goes to the gym, yet I come four or five times a week before work. The staff are very welcoming and motivate me a lot."
