Drugs clinic ‘could force customers out of Workington'

Controversial plans for a drug and alcohol clinic in Workington town centre have been recommended for approval, despite claims by shopkeepers that businesses will suffer.

Have your say

Why can it not be placed in quieter area where ALL shoppers do not have to endure it?
Say near the police station where they can be nicked easier if there is trouble.
In full public view is not a good advertisement for Workington, who will go shopping where drug addicts loiter?

If there is going to be drug use in the area anyway (which there is, and denial of it will not help in any way!) then providing a place that offers counselling as well as ensuring that addicts are able to take drugs safely if they're going to do it. Think about it - would you rather someone shoot up and leave their dirty needles behind a bus shelter, where kids could find them or step on them and risk cross infection, or would you rather there be a facility for the safe disposal of dirty needles and provision of clean needles which present a much lower risk of cross infection? This kind of initiative will serve only to help those that need it in the area.

craig travel must be 300yds up the road from this place how can that affect its trade?

Sorry but what a load of moaning Nimbys! I take the longer view that this clinic might actually help reduce the number of drug and alcohol users in the area, which is a GOOD thing. Secondly its not like its right in the middle of the shopping area is it, and some of the comments would lead you to believe that there will be a mob of people on the pavement shooting up. Sorry but I would like to think that from the outside its going to be pretty unremarkable and that there won't be throngs of thousands waiting to get in.

There are 2 DRUG centers in Workington near the town center so why do we need a third in the center of town. Is it that the 2 are Charity run and their fund are being cut.!!!!!

I fully understand the concerns of businesses and residents of the town centre. I for one would not like to bump into people carrying dirty needles on their way to exchanging them. Nobody forces people to abuse drugs and alcohol in fact aren't drugs supposed to be illegal??

Suely the town centre should be trying to attract new businesses instead of frightening off the existing ones.

This kind of hysteria is inevitable. Let Mr. Nelson move his business if he must, the rehabilitation and treatment if drug casualties is a more important cause than his own desire to live in a profitable bubble free from 'more trouble'

i agree that it won't be nice but it will be more embarrasing for the people going into the place than the ones walking past it
