Maryport Cottage Hospital’s matron is to retire next week after 42 years in the health service.
Carol Ivison, 58, started as a nurse and worked her way up to senior sister, then modern matron and is currently matron at Victoria Cottage Hospital on Ewanrigg Road.
She has spent most of her career in her home town of Maryport, apart from a spell training at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.
She said: “The job of matron includes administration, looking after staff and patients and ensuring the hospital is in good condition.”
She said she was leaving next Wednesday with the conviction that, with the help of a wonderful staff, the community hospital was at the top of its game.
The hospital is undergoing a revamp as its theatres are upgraded to offer minor surgery.
Mrs Ivison, who has lived in Maryport all her life, has three sons and three grandchildren and said that retirement would give her more time to spend with her grandchildren and to do some gardening.
