Plan unveiled for £200,000 West Cumbria drugs clinic

Plans for a new £200,000 alcohol and drug clinic in Workington have been revealed.

Have your say

Maybe this clinic is needed maybe it's not.

I would prefer to hear about how addicts become addicted in the first place. It used to be alcohol that was the main addiction now it is numerous types of addictive substances that have become too easily to access.

Many people suffer from traumatic experiences and have other issues yet they do not become addicted to alcohol or drugs, I wonder why.

A town centre retail location is not the most appropriate location for this organisation. Whilst I support the need for such a facility, surely a building further out of town would be better suited - to all parties.

Just look at this paper every week and see what people are brought before the courts for. Thieving, violence, motoring offences, causing death, child neglect, vandalism, threatening behaviour and fraud all excused because of their addiction. It is wonderful that they are offered help with their addictions but why bring them into the town centre unless their behaviour becomes rational whenever they need to have support or change their needles or have a fix. I am not objecting to treatment being offered but having it in the centre of the town when local shops need to prosper for the economic good of us all.

Undesirables? Not at all. I am a qualified nurse and have worked in addictions for 20 years. It is , for me , a priviledge to witness the strength of my clients , who achieve abstinence after years of addiction. My clients come often with histories of abuse, serious mental illness and/or trauma. Drugs/alcohol are often used to self medicate.
I am so pleased that this is happening and would like to be a part of it when it opens.

well thats the typical response you expect when reading this having lost a member of family with drugs i understand they need all the help they can get althougth they did have a choice to take them or not

Not all drug addicts/alcoholics are undesirables, these people need help and need somewhere that is easily accessable. What do you suggest Chuck put them all out of sight and hope they go away. The only problem I see in such a small town as Workington people might be ashamed to go for help as the centre in such a noiticable position in town, but i'm sure the people in charge have much more experience than me. Good luck to those and their families trying to get clean.

No wonder the town has empty shops if undesirables are brought into the town centre for treatment. Its a pity the police station was not in Pow Street so there would be a one stop shop for the shop lifters on their way for medication.
