Children at a Workington school got their hands dirty to plant 420 trees.

Westfield Primary School pupils planted oak, willow, cherry, maple and silver birch trees on the school's grounds last week.

The trees were donated by the Woodland Trust to help the school redevelop its outside area.

Chris Tweddle, deputy headteacher, said: "The children absolutely loved it. It was a very nice experience for them.

"We told them what to do and away they went. It will be a nice legacy for them.

"The trees have a seven-year grow cycle and after that the children could use the wood to make it into something.

"But our plan is to make a woodland trail area."

The school received a £10,000 grant from Tesco thanks to its Bags Of Help scheme to redevelop its garden.
