Year five pupils became detectives for the day as part of a CSI Day at Workington Academy.

Children from Victoria Junior School and Distington Community School took part several science-related activities in the event.

A fictional crime was set up centering around some stolen biscuits and pupils had to try and find out who had taken them.

The day began with a video showing the crime.

They took part in blood spattering, hair and vomit analysis, fingerprinting and ink analysis activities.

They made notes throughout the day as they tried to solve the mystery.

The aim of the day was to help year five pupils become familiar with a secondary school environment.

Nicola Tweddle, year seven director of learning at Workington Academy, said: "I think it's important because we're trying to give them experiences.

"They don't have access to some of the equipment and it gives them a chance to do some practical science.

"It gets them looking forward to two years time when they're year seven students."

Science teachers from the academy led the activities.

Rebecca Crowther, year five teacher at Victoria Junior School, said: "This gives them time to see what the academy looks like before they make a decision about what secondary school they go to.

"The pupils have absolutely loved it and enjoyed doing hands on practicals."
