Children from a Workington school’s choir will be performing in front of the world when Scotland takes on New Zealand.

Westfield Primary School’s choir will be singing the national anthems of the teams before the match at the Zebra Claims stadium a week tomorrow at 8pm.

It is Scotland’s final game of the Four Nations tournament.

Tyler Richardson, year six pupil, said: “I’m excited, it’s a really good opportunity.

“I feel more confident about singing the New Zealand’s anthem.

“It’s very complicated because it’s in different languages, but once you get that it’s quite easy.

“This is the first time I’ll be singing in front of such a big audience.”

Kayla Bales Riley, a year four pupil, said: “I’m nervous about the performance but I’m excited at the same time.

“When I was in year three my teacher told me I had a really nice voice, that’s why I sing in the choir.

“I really like to sing Flower of Scotland . I think it’s a good opportunity for us to sing at the match.”

The children are preparing with help from Sean Ruane, of Chant Productions.

The choir is formed by a mixture of children from different years.

Karen Barley, headteacher, said: “Chant got in touch with us to see if we’d be interested in performing and I thought this was a great opportunity for the children, since we have a strong choir.

“They’re going to be brilliant, the children are very excited and the staff worked very hard to ensure they are ready.

“The choir gives an opportunity to children to enjoy themselves and showcase their talent.”

Alongside North Lakes School in Penrith, they will also be performing a pre-match mash-up called Pulp 2016 featuring songs from the likes of John Newman, Arctic Monkeys and Kaiser Chiefs.

On the day, entertainment will take place around the town to celebrate the sporting event.

Streets will be decked out with flags and banners and shops are being encouraged to decorate their windows, put on special offers and extend their opening hours.

A celebration event will take place around The Hub in the town centre from 11am to 6pm.

School pupils and Scottish dancers will perform and there will be a rodeo rugby ball, a climbing wall, haggis and New Zealand lamb burger tasting, a giant crossword.

Town’s Brett and Callum Phillips will represent Scotland in the match, which will be a replay of the World Cup quarter-final of 2013 when Scotland lost out to New Zealand 40-4, with Brett Phillips in the Bravehearts’ starting line-up.

The Kiwis, ranked the number one team in the world, aim to retain the title of Four Nations champions.

The home of Workington Town is one of six different venues across the country used in this year’s tournament.

The final is to head to one of the most iconic stadiums in world sport, Anfield, on Sunday November 20.
