Staff and students at Workington Academy have been bringing Charles Dickens to a new generation after holding an event with feeder primary schools.

They organised Dickens Day and invited year six pupils from five schools to take part in a series of interactive workshops and performances which celebrated the work of the author.

Pupils from the town's Victoria Junior School, Beckstone Primary School in Harrington, Great Clifton's Derwent Vale Primary School, Seaton Junior School and Distington Community School attended and sixth form students from the academy helped out.

The day featured workshops on Victorian class structure and school life and scenes from Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol.

It was organised as part of the academy's enrichment process and there are plans to hold more events throughout the academic year.

They also borrowed some items from the Helena Thompson Museum for the event.
