Pupils at a Workington school were grilled by employers as part of an event to prepare them for work.

St Joseph's School hosted the event for its year 10 and 11 pupils as part of a wider pupil development day in the school, which saw children focus on life skills and other things not covered by the curriculum.

Thomas Armstrong, Millcroft Veterinary Group, United Utilities and Kaefer were among the companies who sent employees to hold mock interviews with youngsters before providing feedback and tips.

Kyle Sherburn, 14, was interviewed by an engineering expert.

He said: "I was a bit nervous but it wasn't too bad, I was quite confident.

"He specified I should work on my application form and giving more detail in my answers.

"I think it will certainly be helpful when I come to have proper job interviews."

Laura Setterfield, HR manager at Kaefer, was one of the interviewers.

She said: "I think it was an eye-opener for them to see it from the employer's point of view.

"It's really nice that from the five that I've spoken to they were all talking about a career path.

"It's positive how much they had been thinking about their future."

Owen O'Donnell, 15, was interviewed by Jonno Hazelwood from Sellafield and found the process informative.

He said: "He told me everything I did wrong that I can improve so it's been really helpful.

"It also puts you through that barrier of confidence if it's your first interview."
