Pupils at Crosscannoby St John's Primary School, near Maryport, have bid an emotional farewell to their retiring headteacher.

Stephen Mitchelhill, 60, who lives near Carlisle, has been a teacher for almost 40 years.

The father-of-two originally came to Crosscannonby in September 2005 from Birmingham.

He said: "It's been the best 10 years I've had in teaching. There have been absolutely loads of highlights.

"One of the first things they showed me was the punishment book and it was absolutely hilarious.

"And after years and years of trying we've opened a nursery which is vital in the school's future."

During his tenure, Mr Mitchelhill has worked with more than 60 pupils and has also organised several art exhibitions including events at Carlisle Cathedral.

He was presented with cards and presents by the pupils and a special assembly took place .

He added: "It's a great place to work. It's moved with the times and it's now really established as a school.

"One great thing about the job is that it has allowed me to travel and see different parts of the world and I will continue with that."
