Derwent Vale Primary School in Great Clifton has installed a new footpath in a bid to prevent its pupils getting injured in accidents.

The school has spend £4,000 on the path after near misses between pupils and traffic.

The fenced path leads from Clifton Lodge to Stoneycroft, near the school, and staff now have plans to install a zebra crossing to further increase safety.

The issue of pupil safety has been regularly raised by the school governors.

Fran Edmondson, headteacher, said: “It’s quite a serious issue. We’ve had one or two near misses and the other issue we have is cars coming down to school on a single track road.

“We’re trying to reduce traffic coming towards the school. I’m very relieved that we’ve got the footpath in.”

Mrs Edmondson added that the school is also trying to encourage pupils to walk to school and the new path will also help to ease traffic.
