Two schools are due to get new crossings to improve the safety of children.

Crossings for Ashfield Infant School, on Newlands Lane, Workington, and Seaton Academy, on Main Road, Seaton, are at the design stage.

The announcement was made at a county council's local committee for Allerdale.

Councillor Celia Tibble, who has been in talks with Cumbria Highways for the Seaton crossing for several months, said: "I think it's wonderful. At the committee we were assured that the schools would get the crossings as soon as possible."

Figures from a survey conducted in March by the Highways Agency suggested that although the footfall and number of cars was quite high, it was not enough to warrant a pedestrian crossing.

Coun Tibble said: "It's great they decided to ignore those figures and still do the crossing because they have evidence that there is an issue with safety there."

Ongoing problems with drivers parking on double yellow lines when dropping off the children, led to a joint campaign between Cumbria Constabulary and the school last year.

Seaton Academy has been without a crossing patrol since September.

In 2014 children at Ashfield infants campaigned to find someone to fill the position of crossing patrol when their lollipop lady went on maternity leave.

Pat Smith, headteacher at Ashfield Infant School, said: "This is wonderful news, we've been trying to get something outside the school for years. There was a time when we didn't have a lollipop lady, now we do but when she's ill we don't get a replacement."
