A top student from Cockermouth School is up for a national award which celebrates individuals who have excelled within the education system.

Catherine Dumbill, 18, left school in the summer and is studying human sciences at Oxford University.

She has been shortlisted for a national award at the British Education Awards in London.

Catherine won the north regional area A-level student category and has been invited to a gala dinner and award ceremony in the Grand Connaught Rooms in London on January 30.

She was nominated by the school’s head of year 13, Duncan Murray.

He said: “Catherine was considered for this award as she has been an inspirational student throughout all of her time at Cockermouth School.

“She achieved some of the best A-level results – A* in physics, A* in biology, A in maths and A in history – alongside taking part in a long list of truly impressive extra-curricular activities.

“She has been a role model for students across the entire school.”
