MEET Workington Academy's first head girl and boy.

Year 13 students Loren Hadfield and Jack Earl, both 17, have been appointed as ambassadors for the new school as its first term gets into full swing.

The pair were selected by staff from a selection of applicants.

They will play a key role in liaising between pupils and staff and setting an example to younger pupils.

Loren and Jack will also act as advocates for the school, taking part in events such as next Tuesday's year six open evening to share their experiences.

Loren is relishing finishing sixth form in a brand new school.

The former Stainburn School pupil said: "I really like it. Bringing together Southfield and Stainburn we have got the best of both.

"All the teachers are much happier in this set up as well as the students which is more of an encouragement."

Jack, also a former Stainburn pupil, added: "It feels like a fresh set up and something new that people can get stuck into.

"It's dead set now and kids can come here and know it's permanent.

"It feels like I'm back home now after being at Southfield for a year of sixth form.

"There's a lot more going on. The two schools have combined and that's combined the opportunities available."

Loren and Jack will be supported by deputies, who are yet to be appointed.
