WEST Cumbrian primary schools got a lesson in keeping fit and active at an action-packed training day on Friday.

Staff and volunteers from schools including Broughton primary, Harrington’s Beckstone primary, Great Clifton's Derwent Vale primary and Workington’s Northside and St Gregory's primaries, joined A-level students on a sports leadership pathway at Maryport's Netherhall School.

They were training to became accredited Energy Club leaders.

They took turns leading short, energetic sessions of games designed to get hearts racing and develop the confidence and leadership qualities of each leader.

Sports Leaders UK was awarded £4,881 by The Quarry Hill Fund, administered by Cumbria Community Foundation, to deliver the training.

It has also provided activity cards and equipment for the volunteer-backed initiative, which provides a lasting legacy from the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The leaders can now go back into their schools and deliver 20-minute fitness games before, during or after schools to promote healthy living.
