Maths whizzes at a Workington school have proven their times tables credentials by winning a national competition.

Ashfield Junior School has been using the Times Tables Rock Stars website to test pupils’ maths skills against hundreds of other schools and ended up finishing top.

Youngsters had to complete as many times tables problems as possible, racking up an impressive 238,000 correct answers to beat off the competition and smash the record they set when they won the competition last year.

School administrator Gemma Robinson said: “It updated every hour with how many correct answers we’d got and in the end we were the school which had done the best.

“They loved it and it’s a fantastic achievement.

“It shows how hard they’ve worked and how engaged with their maths they are and hopefully it carries on inspiring them to succeed.”
