Running is proving a big hit at a school near Cockermouth which has launched a new club.

Twenty-three pupils at Broughton Primary School are having lots of fun – and also boosting their health and fitness – thanks to a new weekly running group.

The eight to 11-year-olds plan to take part in the 5km Workington Parkrun on December 10.

The first three sessions are being run by Sam Ayers, of BodyFit Cumbria.

The classes will then be led by teaching assistant Amanda Cockton, supported by headteacher Karen Shankland.

Mrs Shankland said: “I thought a running club would be a great way for the children to keep fit while also promoting healthy living.

“The park run gives them something to aim for – it’s a great goal.”

Mrs Ayers said: “We’re having lots of fun and games, it’s important they enjoy it. It’s a great way to build habits for life.”

Pupil Jake Winter, 11, said: “I have done a bit of running before but it’s good having the club. It will be quite exciting to do a Parkrun.”
