A Cockermouth preschool has been told it is inadequate by Ofsted.

An inspector criticised Mary Platt Methodist Pre-School for failing to have robust systems to ensure all committee members were suitable for their role.

She raised further concerns that staff did not help children to explore their home languages if they were not English.

Keith Rushton, chairman of governors at the committee-run preschool, said the overall rating came because an oversight by the management committee.

He added: "We had failed to complete all our committee member records on line.

"The corrective action to put the right paperwork in place is almost complete."

The quality of teaching, learning and assessment were rated good, along with its outcomes for children.

The pre-school, on Lortson Street, was set up in 1963 and has 32 children on its roll, aged between two and four.

The inspector praised the children for their level of independence and confidence and said they made good progress.

She also commended the staff for consistently strong teaching and praised the outdoor learning environment.

The school will be inspected again in six months.

Mr Rushton said he hoped the outcome of that visit would be more positive.
