There are superheroes galore in a Cumbrian school.

Nine young superheroes have appeared in the reception class at Bridekirk Dovenby School, sporting colourful capes and marvellous eye masks.

The youngsters were chosen to wear the costumes after excelling in different aspects of learning.

Teacher Lynsey Smith said: "As part of our curriculum there are nine superheroes linked to characteristics of effective learning, from Fantastic Focus to Agent Ideas and Have a Go Hero.

"I wanted to encourage children to think about how they learn so came up with the idea of the capes. So, when we see them doing something they have not done before they get to wear the cape and masks.

"We then take a photo of them for the wall, and write down what they have done."

Mrs Smith approached Anna Dove, of Great Broughton, whose daughter Honey, four, is in reception.

Anna has a small textile and reupholstery business, Dotty Dove's Designs, and was delighted to help.

Anna, who has another daughter Willow, six, said: "I always like a new challenge, although I don't normally make superhero capes."

The superhero outfits, in a range of colours and materials, are a big hit.

Mrs Smith said: "The children love them and are all wanting to have a go."

The outfits were handed out for the first time on Monday.

Martha Daniels, five, was presented with the I Know Agent cape.

She said: "I like it because it's got a flower."

Rohan Smith, four, was given the Have A Go Hero cape.

He said: "I like wearing it, it's got a letter on it."
