Youngsters at a Workington school are starring in London's National Gallery.

Year one pupils at Ashfield Infant and Nursery School are taking part in the annual Take One Picture project for schools across the country.

The idea behind the project is that children choose an aspect of a painting and make something relevant during lessons.

Ashfield pupils used the 18th century picture Mr and Mrs Andrews by Thomas Gainsborough which shows a couple sitting on a bench in the countryside for inspiration.

They then decided to focus on the bench and made their own Rainbow Bench for the school reading area.

The school had hoped to send the bench down to the gallery to put on display, but two scrapbooks featuring photos of the children making the bench and audio recordings of them describing how they made it will be on display instead.

Their work was unveiled at the gallery last week.

Headteacher Pat Smith has been trying to get the school involved in the project for several years and successfully entered Ashfield this year.

She said: "I love the arts and going back several years they had a meeting for headteachers at the National Gallery where they took us round the gallery."

Michelle Jones, year one class teacher, said: "It's absolutely amazing. The bench is in their reading area and they use it all the time.

"The whole project is fabulous. I'm very proud to have been chosen for the National Gallery."

The pupils' work will be on display in the gallery until Sunday, September 25.
