Youngsters at Bassenthwaite Primary School have taken learning out of the classroom.

A group of pupils visited the Calvert Trust to help tend its gardens.

Early years foundation stage and key stage one children also visited Mirehouse to explore its grounds.

Foundation stage pupils visited Tesco in Whitehaven to learn about where their food comes from.

Infant pupils kept fit with a series of Moky exercise classes while children from years two to six also enjoyed swimming lessons at Keswick Leisure Pool.

Junior pupils played rugby on the village green and received a kwik cricket lessons to prepare for a tournament.

They also took part in a triathlon and a mountain bike challenge and were visited by Athletus, who tutored them to be like a hero of Ancient Greece.

Some junior pupils explored life cycles, classification and food chains with a study of the River Greta.

Sara Royle, headteacher, said: "Learning outside of the classroom is very important to us because it enhances the curriculum we do in school.

"It's vital that we're using the rich environment we have here.

"Not only have these activities helped the children academically but they also pick up valuable life skills."
