A pair of Rotary clubs separated by hundreds of miles have come together to encourage youngsters to experience different cultures.

Fourteen visitors from Selm, Workington's German twin town, met their West Cumbrian counterparts on Friday.

The clubs want to set up a school exchange programme so that pupils in each town can swap places and experience a small part of life in a different country.

Selm has been twinned with Workington since 1994 but only established its own Rotary club in 2011.

Martin Neugebauer, founding president of Selm Rotary Club, was part of the group who also met Workington mayor Carole Armstrong at Hunday Manor Hotel, Winscales.

He said: "It's good for the clubs to work together of course and it's healthy for the young people in both areas to mix."

John Head, of Workington Rotary, added: "This is the first time the Rotary clubs have come together.

"What we're hoping for this weekend is that we can go forward as a rotary movement and create some educational exchanges through schools.

"The Rotary movement thrives on working together."
