Breakfast is now being served at a small village school in West Cumbria with help from North Lakes Foodbank.

Crosscanonby St John's School started a breakfast club at the beginning of this term.

Headteacher Chris Steele said the foodbank was providing cereal and, in turn, the school was raising awareness of its work.

He said the breakfast club had been started to suit working parents.

Children arrive around 8am and have cereal, fruit juice, toast and tea.

Mr Steele said as well as benefiting parents, the club gave the school the opportunity to provide more learning opportunities.

He added: “We do fun learning with maths games and reading.”

The school is also providing a variety of after school clubs including Lego, cricket, football, film club and monkey skills.

Mr Steele said: “This is a school of 53 pupils. Being small means that that these extra activities are time consuming for staff but they are all willing to do it.”
