Cockermouth School won an award at a ceremony held to celebrate equality and diversity in Cumbria.

The Diverse Cumbria Awards were held at Carlisle's Crown and Mitre Hotel.

The school was named Public Sector Champion of the Year in recognition of the work it has done to stamp out racist, homophobic and hateful language.

Cockermouth School teacher Mat Richards has run several campaigns in the school, focusing on positive language.

He attended the awards with deputy headteacher John Brettle.

David Gale, of Trailblazers was named Community Volunteer of the Year, Prism Arts was Community Group Champion of the Year, Eden Flood Volunteers was Business Champion of the Year and Julie Dodd, of Cumbria Constabulary, was Positive Role Model of the Year.
