Sixty-five pupils from Eaglesfield Paddle Primary Academy put on two performances of Olivia, and raised £433 for Cancer Research UK.

The year five and six youngsters performed in the play which is based on a female version of a favourite character from children’s fiction -the orphan Oliver - and entwined with other familiar faces such as Eliza Doolittle and Ebenezer Scrooge.

Deputy head Claire Fleming said: “It was a brilliant team effort as every one of the 65 pupil cast had a speaking part and the whole production was put together in just over two weeks.

"It was lovely to see the children grow in confidence. They enjoyed the opportunity to perform in front of their parents, peers and other guests.”

The play linked with the children’s studies as they are learning about the Victorian period.

A collection was taken at the end of each performance with the money going to a charity of the children’s choice.
