A record number of sixth formers at Cockermouth School have landed Oxbridge offers.

Three boys and three girls have been offered conditional places at the top universities.

Peter French, assistant headteacher, said: "I have been here 26 years and we usually have an average of two or three offers each year. This has blown all of that out of the water, it's unbelievable.

"This particular year happens to be exceptionally good and talented academically. Work has also been done to raise the profile of Oxford and Cambridge and prepare students with their applications. We have organised trips to the universities and mock interviews."

Cambridge has offered places to Matthew Lewis, of Cockermouth, to read natural sciences, Ben Farnworth, of Branthwaite, near Workington, to read law, Daniel Beresford, of Papcastle, to read veterinary medicine and Alice King, of Frizington, to read English.

Oxford has offered places to Harriet Wigginton, of Pardshaw Hall, for geography at Oxford and Catherine Dumbill, of Bridekirk, to read human sciences.

Daniel, who needs three A*s to secure his place, said: "I was very excited to get the offer and also quite relieved as veterinary medicine is quite a hard thing to get on to and Cambridge was my top choice."

Catherine, who needs to get three As, said: "It was fantastic to get the offer. It's a hard thing to do so it's a relief, and exciting."

Rob Petrie, headteacher, said: "This is a testament to the hard work of the students and the support of their teachers and parents.

"We encourage our students to aim high and apply for the most challenging courses at a range of highly-regarded institutions and these students have demonstrated that with hard work and an aspirational attitude, they are among the best in the country."
