Sampling the culinary delights of Barcelona was on the menu for a group of Lakes College students.

Twelve students from the Lillyhall college who are studying NVQs in the catering and hospitality sector enjoyed the trip as a reward for their extra efforts this year.

The culinary team receives an hourly rate for catering out-of-college-hours events, and saved up for the trip which included a tapas tour and a visit to the vibrant La Boqueria market.

For Jess Parkin, 19, of Little Broughton, it was her last event at college. She said: "It was an experience of a life time and an amazing way to say goodbye to a fabulous bunch of friends."

Kayleigh Blakely, 16, of Silloth, added: This trip was only made possible from the hard work form the staff and the students, we all came together a team and worked hard to get there!”

Maurice Fell, 47, of Frizington, said: “It was a totally amazing experience made possible from hard work and determination from the best team ever!”

The college's learning and teaching mentor, Michelle Blakely, said: "This is the first time we’ve organised the trip.

"The culinary team went above and beyond curriculum standards. We chose Barcelona as it’s renounced for food but also cultural experiences important to personal development.

"For some students it was their first trip abroad and they loved it. We hope to organise another trip for the next group.

"We’re really proud of the students, for some we’ve being part of their lives for four years so to see them succeed is a real pleasure."
