Year nine art students at Workington Academy have teamed up with primary school children to create a giant mural.

The project is part of Workington in Bloom and about 90 academy pupils have been involved.

Youngsters from Beckstone Primary School in Harrington, Seaton Junior School, and Workington's Northside Primary, Victoria Junior and St Patrick's Primary schools drew flowers to go on the boards, with sets of pens and pencils awarded to the best ones.

The academy pupils then used the flowers to decorate giant boards for the mural.

It will go on display on Washington Street opposite Kwik Fit.

Pupils worked on the project during lessons and at home.

The opportunity came about after Allison Murphy, curriculum leader for expressive arts, asked the town council if they could do something for Workington in Bloom.

She said: "The project is about their own town. It's easy to understand and it's all floral stuff that they can engage with.

"It's been a fantastic experience for the students."

Students April Mossop, 14, and Leah Stoddart, 14, have been helping to decorate the boards.

April said: "It's good because everyone has been doing what they wanted to do. It's been good fun."

Leah said: "It's great as it's got everyone involved."
