Little weather readers shone while learning the ropes from a television expert.

BBC weatherman Paul Mooney visited Crosscanonby St John Primary School to show youngsters the tricks of the trade.

The school's year one and two class have been learning about the weather this term and decided to write to Mr Mooney, asking if he would visit.

To their surprise he agreed, and spent the morning with the children.

He started with a question and answer session where he was asked a selection of questions on the topic, including hurricanes and rainbows.

He then faced a tougher grilling from some youngsters who wanted to know how big the sun was and how the moon was made.

As well as questioning Mr Mooney, they had a first-hand experience of reading the weather to camera.

Teacher Keira Connor said: "It's been wonderful. The children have really enjoyed our topic and it's been lovely for them to experience something like this and it may inspire some future meteorologists."

Paul said: "It's been great fun. It's good to get out and find the next generation of weather buffs. I'm really impressed.

"They wrote me some wonderful letters about coming to their school and I'm really impressed with the weather project and displays in the classroom."
