Sixth form students from across West Cumbria got the chance to use their physics skills this week as part of an engineering challenge.

Youngsters from schools including  Workington Academy and Cockermouth School were set the task of building a chair out of cardboard.

The only tools they were allowed to use were a pair of scissors.

The 34 year 12 and 13 students had to build their chairs meeting criteria and design specifications.

Run by West Cumbrian engineering charity the React Foundation, the Take a Seat challenge saw the teams work towards bonus points if they included back and arm rests.

They were helped by an outreach team from London's Science Museum.

Rachel Bicknell, 17, of Derwentside Gardens, from the winning Cockermouth School team, added: "The time constraints on the task make it that bit more difficult but it's been a good thinking challenge for us.

"We've had to take a lot of things into account such as shape and dimensions."

The team will be given the chance to spend a day at Cockermouth's Fab Lab centre as a prize for winning the challenge.

The event, held at Lakes College, Lillyhall, on Wednesday, was part of a series of workshops and shows run by the charity over two weeks for primary school pupils to sixth formers.

The series is supported by the Cumberland Building Society, E.On and Nuclear Management Partners.
