Teachers across Allerdale are due to go on strike on Tuesday.

Members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) are walking out in protest about school funding and also want negotiations to resume on their contracts.

In an NUT ballot nationally, more than 90 per cent of members voted in favour of industrial action despite a 24.5 per cent turnout. The union wrote a letter to Secretary of State for Education Nicky Morgan in a last appeal before it decided to take action.

Mike McDonald, NUT regional secretary, said: “No teacher takes strike action lightly. Inadequate levels of funding, however, are having a negative effect on children and teachers that cannot go unaddressed.

“According to the Institute of Fiscal Studies, schools are facing the worst funding cuts since the 1970s.”
