Talented musicians at a Workington school have taken their first step towards pop stardom, by producing their own album.

The group of year 11 pupils recorded Now That’s What I Call Workington Academy as part of their coursework for a BTEC music course.

Nikki Smith played the flute, Jade Brown and Skye Keller were on keyboards, Beth Spedding and Matthew Johnson sang solos and a duet, and Amy Millar manned the mixing desk to act as producer.

Matthew sang Beyoncé’s Sweet Dreams while Beth tackled Sam Smith’s Not In That Way and the pair combined for a duet on Adele’s Someone Like You.

Jade performed a rendition of the Adele hit on the keyboards, with Skye opting for Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On and Nikki chose a flute version of Off She Goes .

Three tracks contributed by older pupils rounded off the nine-track album, which was recorded in the school’s rehearsal rooms using the GarageBand app on an iPad.

Matthew said: “I enjoyed being able to choose what we wanted to do and having some creative freedom to do it.”

Although the youngsters had to record, produce and market the album on their own, teacher Sarah Bennett made sure things were running smoothly.

She added: “I’m pleased with how they all worked together as a team. They all had their own roles and were able to carry them out and be very independent.

“I’m impressed with what they came up with and to go off, prepare and be ready to perform on their own was very good.”
