The world of David Walliams was brought to life at an event at Workington Academy.

Year five pupils from feeder primary schools went to the academy to take part in David Walliams Day.

The event featured activities based around the author's books.

Youngsters took part in drama, a treasure hunt, crime solving and speech writing.

English teachers dressed up as characters from books including The Queen's Orang-Utan, Awful Auntie, Grandpa's Great Escape, Demon Dentist, Ratburger and Gangster Granny.

The book characters all played a part in the various activities on the day.

The aim of the event was to encourage children to read and to make reading fun.

Hannah Park, English teacher, said: "We did a Dickens day last October as a taster for year six pupils and we wanted to do something for year five to get them excited about going into secondary school.

"We thought about what authors they read and David Walliams is popular.

"It makes the idea of secondary school less intimidating for the children and it gets them used to being in a bigger building.

"It's also to develop their confidence and looking at things in more creative ways."

Pupils from Northside Primary School, Ashfield Junior School, Westfield Primary School, St Mary's Primary School, St Patrick's Primary School, Derwent Vale Primary School, Beckstone Primary School and Victoria Junior School all took part.

David Walliams is also known for his role in Little Britain and as a judge on Britain's Got Talent.
